/!\ The ChemBiotech curriculum is taught in french for 50 % of the courses – you NEED a sufficient french level to go into it.
- ChemBiotech description
ChemBioTech is THE new engineering training recognized by the CTI which allows you to have dual skills in chemistry and biotechnology in two engineering schools simultaneously, a unique course in France founded to meet the demands of professionals!
Being a ChemBioTech student means being a pioneer of a new type of engineer at the interface between two fields intended for sectors such as pharmacy, the environment, green chemistry or even cosmetology. But it also means being part of two large families of students: ECPM and ESBS!
- Promotion
The ChemBioTech training welcomes a total of 20 students per year according to the following distribution:
- 3 CPI of the Gay-Lussac federation
- 5 PC Preparatory Class
- 5 BCPST Preparatory Class
- 7 Admissions based on qualifications – DUT, licenses in the field of chemistry or biology
- CPI Polytech
These figures are subject to change, however the promotion is still made up of 10 chemists and 10 biologists.
Please note, the majority of those admitted by title have completed a course containing both areas. Few people have a background exclusively in chemistry or biology.
- Curriculum
Consult the training curriculum.
The training takes place over 3 consecutive years:
| Semesters | Courses | Internships (at least 1 month abroad) |
|---|---|---|
| S1-S2 | Refresher in chemistry and biology | 4 weeks min. (Private compagny) |
| S3-S4 | Deepening knowledge | 12 weeks min. |
| S5-S6 | Specialization in Health or Environment | 4 weeks (Public) |
Over these 3 years, 40% of the courses are practical work, the rest is divided between lectures and tutorials.
The courses are therefore given in both schools, the chemistry and language courses at the ECPM with the “Chemist” promotion made up of around a hundred people and the biology courses at the ESBS with the “Biotechnologists” promotion made up of around forty people. Some courses are only given to our promotion.
ChemBioTech training is also very involved internationally, encouraged by French-English bilingualism. In addition, a compulsory LV2 is your choice: German or Spanish. However, there is no required level and groups of beginners are formed, don’t worry!
Most of the courses are in English, notably at ESBS, some are in French and chemistry courses are split into German for the more bilingual among us.
ChemBio weeks have the advantage of being very little repetitive, each week is different from another. A typical week in the first year consists of spending the first half at ECPM (on the Cronenbourg campus) and the second at ESBS (on the Illkirch campus) and vice versa in the second year. The timetables are designed to avoid as much as possible having to travel between the two schools (maximum once a week).
In the first year, support courses in biology and organic chemistry are carried out to bring the entire class up to speed. In addition, a strong spirit of mutual aid between biologists and chemists makes it possible to understand without too much difficulty but with a little personal investment.
- University life
The student life of a “ChemBio” is quite active, if he has courses in both schools, he also participates in their activities! Whether on the ECPM side within a class of around a hundred students or around forty at ESBS, integration is going very well in both schools.
In ChemBioTech you have the unique opportunity to be able to actively participate in two different schools and atmospheres. So there can be ChemBio students in all student associations. And a CBT respo is elected in the Student Office of the 2 schools.

- Interview and admission
Admissions based on qualifications are done very quickly during the year (deadline at the beginning of May). If you are interested don’t hesitate to send us a message on Instagram or by email!
After studying the file, if it is accepted, there is an interview to be carried out on site at the ECPM or by video if you cannot travel. The interview for this year was made up of 4 people. The questions are focused on personal motivation, investment as well as knowledge of chemistry and biology. There are around thirty candidates throughout France whose applications are selected for the 7 available places.
- Access and accommodation
The ESBS is located in the innovation park at the API pole, which is a 5-minute walk from the Campus d’Illkirch stop (lines A and E).
The ECPM is located on the Cronenbourg campus, it is a 5-minute walk from the Arago stop (Bus G and 19).
The two schools are quite far from each other, by tram/bus it takes a little less than an hour between the two. By car about twenty minutes ago, the ChemBio are therefore also fans of carpooling!
Regarding accommodation, the most practical is to be halfway between ESBS and ECPM. Buses to reach ECPM leave from the Gare or Rotonde, there are three notable districts of Strasbourg which are suitable:
City center, well located but a little expensive and difficult to access by car.
Gare and Les Halles district, cheaper than the city center and just as well located.
Cronenbourg, even cheaper, fairly easy access by car but you have to take transport to get to the city center, closer to ECPM than ESBS.
Accommodation in Strasbourg goes up very quickly, especially in the city center, so it is important to look as soon as possible!
